DMVicious’ 100 Best Songs of 2013

BestOf2013

It is that time of year when all us music media folk release all those tedious “best of” lists. I could spend a lot of time giving you a little write up on each song, but that would just be a waste of both our time. Instead, here is a Spotify playlist loaded with 100 of the hottest jams 2013 had to offer.

Songs are in no particular order. Put that bad-boy on shuffle and enjoy.

Interview: Shark Week comes early for D.C.

Shark Week

Though the Discovery Channel will not be airing its shark-oriented programming until August 4, local garage-rock outfit Shark Week is just days away from a week full of milestones.

Shark Week will play 9:30 Club for the first time this Saturday. The band’s 7″ vinyl, Santurce, will be released next Tuesday, and that will be followed by Shark Week’s first proper tour that Friday. Maybe we can call this Shark Week-Week? [Ed. Note: Sorry :/].

Luckily, the band had a few minutes for a quick video chat earlier this week. We got a chance to ask Ryan, Danielle, Dan and Alberto about recording in Puerto Rico, the ups-and-downs of SXSW and more. Check out the interview below!

Shark Week will perform with Paperhaus at Rock & Roll Hotel Friday, June 7.

So, this week starts out pretty slow, but come Thursday, there are a ton of awesome shows to check out. Notably absent from this week’s Best Bets is Steez Promo’s Moonrise Festival. The EDM festival was due to rock Baltimore’s Sun Park this weekend, but permit issues forced the cancellation of the festival last week. Steez Promo has indicated that they are working to reschedule some of the Moonrise artists at different venues in the area this weekend, we will let you know when/if more information becomes available.

Re-Cap: Sweetlife Festival 2013

Shark Week opens up Sweetlife Festival 2013.

There is an unwirtten law of the universe somewhere that says every time we go to a show at Merriweather Post Pavilion, it has to rain for at least 40-percent of the time we are there. Not just sprinkle either, like at least one extended period of monsoon-esque conditions is required.

Despite the weather being a schizophrenic asshole (we came home sunburned AND soaked), it was a pretty good time. This was our first foray into the salad-centric world of the Sweetlife Festival and the quality of the whole production was quite astounding.

This festival makes much better use of the space at Merriweather than the larger–also freer– Virgin Mobile FreeFest. There was a coherent, whimsical theme all throughout the festival grounds Saturday. The whole place felt like a big, loud farmer’s market. There was an emphasis on local vendors (food trucks, DC Brau and Chocolate City beer vendors) and everything just seemed to work better.

As for the music, here’s a blow-by-blow of our day at Sweetlife: Continue reading

Saturday night was a proud night for the DMV’s burgeoning music scene. Twelve of the area’s best and brightest acts shared the stage at the Hamilton and the result was a resounding display of the diverse talent that resides in the D.C. area.

Earlier this year, Brightest Young Things released its list of “Top 25 DMV Artists to Watch In 2013.” The article generated such positive feedback that BYT decided to go ahead and make it into a live mixtape of sorts.

Yes, we are a day late. Sorry kids. Lucky for you, there is still a lot going on this week. We’d like to draw special attention to The DC Emerging Artists Super Sampler, Vol 1 on Saturday. BYT and the Hamilton Live are co-sponsoring a showcase that will feature a ton of a great local talent, including: Shark Week, Uno Hype, Black Hills, Ra the MC, Kid Named Breezy, Drop Electric and more.

Also, we’d like to point out the foreboding nature of Diarrhea Planet playing a Mexican restaurant. Just saying…
