Sleigh Bells return with “Bitter Rivals”

SLEIGHBELLS

Sleigh Bells is back y’all! Alexis Krauss and Derek Miller have released a video for their new song, “Bitter Rivals.” The duo also revealed a new 10-track LP by the same name that will release on October 8.

According to Pitchfork, Bitter Rivals will be produced by Miller and mixed by Andrew Dawson, who has recently worked on Yeezus, Watch the Throne and Teflon Don.

In conjunction with the new album, Sleigh Bells will hit the road October 4th. There is a D.C. date scheduled for November 19, though the press release seems to indicate the wrong venue (Unless the Upstate Concert Hall has moved to D.C.).

The album’s title track has the same vibe fans have come to expect from the Chicago duo. Miller’s thunderous guitars ring out over a bass-heavy drum loop, while Krauss alternates between her signature lilt and a chant-like pseudo-rap delivery.

Jay-Z announces new album due out July 4

maxresdefault

As if this week’s release of Kanye West’s Yeezus was not big enough news already, Jay-Z has confirmed a July 4 release date for his next album, Magna Carta Holy Grail.

The news was delivered via a Samsung commercial during tonight’s Game 5 of the NBA Championship between the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs. The commercial featured several shots of Hov in the studio working on the album. Keep an eye out for appearances from Rick Rubin, Pharrell Williams, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland. That sounds a lot like the team responsible for Jay-Z’s Black Album, and that has super excited.

Album Review: Fall Out Boy, ‘Save Rock and Roll’

fall-out-boy-save-rock-and-roll-album-artwork-400x400Tuesday marks Fall Out Boy’s long-awaited return to the music world. We must have missed all the cries for more watered down pop-rock, but, alas, here we are. The band chose to title its comeback album Save Rock and Roll. We have a few ideas how to accomplish that task, none of which involve Fall Out Boy or this album.

Apparently this band has never heard the adage, “Less is more.” Every song on the album is so huge and over-produced that any sign of human touch has been erased from the album. Seriously, there is more grit in Taylor Swift’s latest album than you will find on Save Rock and Roll.

TBT: Otis Redding, ‘Otis Blue’ [STREAM]

otis blue

Yes, #TBT is typically an excuse for girls to post high school/baby pics of themselves on Instagram. But, for DMVicious, it is an excuse to post all the old music we love.

In a move that made this blog squeal like a schoolgirl, Spotify finally added Otis Redding’s Otis Blue to its library earlier this week. Several publications including Rolling Stone and Time list Otis Blue among the greatest albums of all time.

Album Review: Unknown Mortal Orchestra, ‘II’

UMO IIRuban Nielson and his Unknown Mortal Orchestra have caught the hearts of indie music media nationwide. The band’s anonymous debut single, “FFunny Ffriends,” set the blogosphere in a frenzy trying to identify the track’s creators. Once the Portland-based trio took credit for the song, it was swiftly signed to Fat Possum Records and released its self-titled debut album. Fast forward two years, and the band has released its follow-up, II.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra has mastered its “old record we found in an attic” aesthetic. The band set that precedent with its first album and has been able to adhere to that sonic landscape throughout. The production is gritty despite its budget, though not quite as rough as the band’s debut album.

The album’s first four tracks are nearly flawless and showcase Nielson’s knack for moody, psychedelic-soul. The lyrical content often gets lost in layered-vocals and trippy atmospherics, but you can still feel what the songs are trying to convey.
