BestOf2013

It is that time of year when all us music media folk release all those tedious “best of” lists. Instead, here is a Spotify playlist loaded with 100 of the hottest jams 2013 had to offer.

Songs are in no particular order. Put that bad-boy on shuffle and enjoy.

The DMVicious Guide to Firefly Festival: Friday | Saturday | Sunday

Alas, here is the final installment of our Firefly guide. The festival is just days away, and the weather forecast looks amazing. The only thing left to do is pack up your camping gear and figure out how to schedule your days. We have given you the scoop on Friday and Saturday, now it is time to breakdown the Sunday schedule.

Sunday lacks some of the bigger names of the previous two days, but there is still a lot of quality music to be heard. We went ahead and skipped the early bands, because you might need to sleep a little later after two nights of partying–also, there are no real must sees in the first couple of slots.

Hot couple alert: David Letterman and Este Haim

haim-letterman-500x336

The sisters HAIM performed their new single, “Falling,” on The Late Show with David Letterman last night. After the performance, Dave shared a moment with the eldest Haim sister, Este. The moment was punctuated by Paul Shaffer’s semi-awkward offer to “make the drinks.”

HAIM was on the show to promote its upcoming full-length debut. These girls are primed for mainstream success. They are like a more grown up, hipper version of Hanson, but HAIM gets bonus points for actually being females and not androgynous teenage boys. Definitely keep an eye on this band. You can catch them live at Firefly Festival, June 23.

VIDEO: HAIM – “Falling”

The band of sisters just released a visual for its new track, “Falling.” We caught HAIM when they opened for Mumford and Sons last week and they were fantastic. Definitely keep an eye on this band (Check them out at Firefly Festival!).

The video puts Danielle, Este and Alana in a whimsical forest and features some gnarly hand-fishing and shoulder dancing.

About Last Night: Mumford & Sons at the Patriot Center

On a slushy Wednesday evening, Mumford & Sons landed in Fairfax, Va., to play the first of two consecutive shows at the Patriot Center. Judging by the scarcity of tickets/asking prices on Craigslist, it was safe to say people have been excited about this show for some time now. That excitement grew to a fever-pitch after Sunday, when the band won Album of the Year at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards.

In the brief walk from the gate to our seats, it was hard to fathom that an English folk band has reached this pinnacle of fame. There were moms and dads on a date, moms and dads with kids, kids who got dropped off by moms and dads, etc. Many people equate that kind of exposure with selling out–which is kind of ironic, because the band literally had sold out both shows at the 10,000-seat arena. With that said, it is refreshing to see that Mumford & Sons has not let its mainstream success alter the quality of its music.

Shortly after Ben Howard wrapped up his set, a large curtain was drawn to conceal the stage.  As the opening chords of “Babel” rang out, the curtain dropped and the band ripped through the titular track from its Grammy Award-winning album.

“We came here to party, we hope you all did as well,” said keyboardist Ben Lovett. It was an interesting comment given the word ‘party’ has never been used to describe Mumford & Sons.
