Nas talks ‘Illmatic,’ current state of hip-hop at Georgetown University

Hip-hop legend Nas is in D.C. this weekend to kick-off his Illmatic 20th Anniversary tour. He will be performing that iconic album in its entirety at the Kennedy Center tonight and Saturday night.

Last night, Nas sat down with Dr. Michael Eric Tyson at Georgetown University to speak on Illmatic, the current state of hip-hop and a variety of other topics. The conversation lasted for more than an hour, but this is a must watch for any true hip-hop head. Check out the video above.

Listen: King Krule has a hip-hop side project

SubLunaCity

So, the British teenager who took the indie scene by storm last year has a hip-hop side project called Sub Luna City. You can stream the group’s mixtape, City Rivims Mk 1, below.

The music is about what you would expect when you hear “King Krule” and “hip-hop” in the same sentence–super moody chords and sparse percussion. This mixtape shows a whole new side to the artist responsible for one of last year’s best debuts.

Happy Holidays from the Silver Liners

It’s always good to hear from friends back home. Check out this video of the Silver Liner’s rendition of “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” This video has me excited to head home for a few days.

Don’t miss the Silver Liners with Dance for the Dying, PLOY, and Two Dragons and a Cheetah at Rock & Roll Hotel on January 11.

RiFF Raff is the newest member of the Neighbourhood

RiFFRaff_Neighbourhood

Yes, really. Well, that’s what the band is saying anyway. Last night, at KROQ’s 24th Annual Almost Acoustic Christmas event, the Neighbourhood’s Jesse Rutherford announced that RiFF Raff–a.k.a. Jody Highroller–has officially joined the band.

This sounds like some kind of a joke or publicity stunt, but the idea of the Neon Icon jumping on a remix of “Sweater Weather” is fun to think about.

DMVicious’ 100 Best Songs of 2013

BestOf2013

It is that time of year when all us music media folk release all those tedious “best of” lists. I could spend a lot of time giving you a little write up on each song, but that would just be a waste of both our time. Instead, here is a Spotify playlist loaded with 100 of the hottest jams 2013 had to offer.

Songs are in no particular order. Put that bad-boy on shuffle and enjoy.

Diplo wishes you ‘A Very Decent Christmas’

AVeryDecentChristmas

Finally, a reason to twerk through the holiday season: Diplo and his Mad Decent crew have blessed the world with A Very Decent Christmas. Grab the wall and “express yourself” with the whole family!

The album features mixes by Diplo, Gent & Jawns, DJ Snake and more. My personal favorite is, “Turn Up Ye Merry Gentlemen.”

A$AP Mob and Wu-Tang Clan collide for ‘Trillmatic’ video

ASAPNast_Trillmatic

It is amazing to hear a record like this drop in 2013. A$AP Nast and Method Man team up for a track that sounds like a leftover from an era when Wu-Tang ruled the world and hip-hop was still dangerous.

Kicking it on the roof with Village Psychic

VillagePsychic_Nov 8 2013

Brooklyn’s Village Psychic has had a busy couple of months. The band made its live debut at a CMJ showcase a few weeks ago, and is gearing up for a show at Tammany Hall on Monday, all while juggling a forthcoming EP and full-length album. On top of that, frontman Will Broussard spends time DJing as Terror Dactel (remember him?) and drumming for the Death Set. Luckily, we found some time to catch up.

Earlier today, I met Village Psychic on the roof of a high-rise in Midtown Manhattan. We hung out in the boiler room for a while and recorded a stripped-down acoustic version of the band’s new track, “Dancer.” After the performance, we chatted about everything from Geocities websites, to Miley Cyrus’ future.

Check out the video and the interview after the jump!
