DMVicious’ 100 Best Songs of 2013

BestOf2013

It is that time of year when all us music media folk release all those tedious “best of” lists. I could spend a lot of time giving you a little write up on each song, but that would just be a waste of both our time. Instead, here is a Spotify playlist loaded with 100 of the hottest jams 2013 had to offer.

Songs are in no particular order. Put that bad-boy on shuffle and enjoy.

Video: Kings Of Leon – “Supersoaker”

The trajectory of Kings Of Leon’s career is interesting. The band started as a scrappy  rock band of brothers (and cousin), and immediately captured the attention of indie music snobs everywhere. After Because Of the Times, the band’s music made a noticeable shift toward more radio friendly tracks like, “Sex On Fire” and “Use Somebody.” That’s when Kings Of Leon lost the majority of its original fan-base, but gained an even bigger one in its place.

After an extended hiatus, the band sounds more like its earlier incarnation. Is it too late for KOL to win back its original fans?

We stopped messing with KOL around the time “Use Somebody” was playing on HOT 99.5, but the band’s first three albums have remained among our favorites albums of the past several years. If “Supersoaker” is any indication of how the upcoming album, Mechanical Bull, will sound, count us as excited–even if Wavves’ Nathan Williams is not.

Lineup announced for Outside Lands 2013

outsidelandsThe folks who book artists for Outside Lands were probably really excited about nabbing Paul McCartney. That’s cool and everything, but we would consider sacrificing our first born to see Hall and Oates. The rest of the lineup is really good too. But, seriously guys: Hall and fucking Oates.

Outside Lands will take over San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, August 9-11.

About [Saturday] Night: Wavves w/ FIDLAR @ Rock & Roll Hotel

wavves_rnr

We apologize for the awful iPhone pic. We didn’t have a proper camera for this show.

As soon as this show was announced, we circled April 13 on our calendar. Wavves and FIDLAR are two of our favorite bands of the moment. Seeing the two acts together at one of the city’s most authentic rock venues was an opportunity we were not going to miss.

Rock & Roll Hotel has played host to a number of great  emerging artists, but Wavves has already kind of “emerged.” The band’s latest single, “Demon To Lean On,” gets radio airplay. The band’s online fan base is rather large and very engaged. Usually, artists are booking 9:30 club at this point in their career.

Luckily, Nathan Williams and company decided they would rather do a quick underplay tour with fellow SoCal surf-punks FIDLAR and Cheatahs.

Best Bets: Concerts you should probably check out

wavvesAw, yeah. Spring is really here now, D.C. The weather is finally seasonally appropriate, cherry blossoms are about to bloom and we’ve got a bunch of shows for you to check out this week. Believe it or not, we had nothing to do with booking Saturday’s show at Rock & Roll Hotel, but we are super stoked to see Wavves with FIDLAR and the Cheatahs. If that is not your kind of thing, than check out the rest of the list. If nothing else on the list suits your fancy, we’re not really sure what to tell ya…

Album Review: Wavves, ‘Afraid Of Heights’

WAVVESA lot of people like to hate on Wavves. Ever since the band got a few placements on MTV, it has become en vogue to dismiss Nathan Williams’ music as style over substance. That is a shame, because beneath the sloppy lo-fi aesthetic, Williams has mastered the art of self-loathing.

It is easy to lump the band into that burnt-out surf-punk category. The difference is that Wavves music has an honesty to it that is largely lacking in that genre.

On its previous full-length release, King of the Beach, Wavves opted for more lo-fi production values. In a somewhat surprising move, the band enlisted producer John Hill for Afraid of HeightsHill’s production credits include M.I.A., P!nk and Rhianna–quite a departure. Continue reading
