About Last Night: The Thermals at the Black Cat

Walking into the venue during the tail-end of Pure Junk’s set was an interesting experience. The band had a decidedly Baltimore/Wham City vibe to it, which made sense once we discovered the band is an off-shoot of the Wham City staple, Double Dagger. With that knowledge, it was slightly less shocking to see the band’s frontman feeling himself–literally, not figuratively–during amid-set stroll through the audience.

The second band on last night was another B-More product called Hollywood. This band was made for Burger Records. Seriously, they fucking rip. The music fits right in with this retro-punk revival that everyone is on right now. One key component to pulling off that aesthetic is having a kick-ass live show, and Hollywood handled that with aplomb last night.  However, it would be nice to see Hollywood at a show with a more engaged audience–we’re looking at you, group of teenage boys who were front and center but would not facilitate the frontman’s stage-dive attempts.

Rolling Stone names 9:30 Club best ‘Big Room’

930

As part of its “Venues That Rock” series, Rolling Stone published the top-20 “Best Big Rooms in America.” The rankings were determined by a group of big-name artists, managers and promoters. Among the voters: Britt Daniel (Spoon), Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy), Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), Thomas Mars (Phoenix), Miranda Lambert, Talib Kweli, Bassnectar, Sharon Osbourne and several other industry power-brokers.

As anyone who has seen a show there would agree, 9:30 Club landed in the top spot. Billboard has named the club one of the best in the nation several times, but that distinction is based on more quantitative values (sales, attendance, etc.). Getting the vote of confidence from such a diverse panel of esteemed industry personalities seems more rewarding for a club that blossomed from the District’s hardcore scene in 1980.

Having just seen a sold-out show at the club Tuesday, the sheer awesomeness of the club is fresh in our mind. 9:30 club is oddly authentic for such a large, high-profile venue. Most other venues in its class seem contrived in comparison. We could go on for days counting the ways we love 9:30 Club, but we imagine most of you have already been there, and you know what’s up. If you have not been to a show at 9:30 Club, you would be served experiencing it for yourself than reading us gush about it.

The Rolling Stone write-up features a quote from voter Patrick Stump where he says, “You wonder if the locals know how lucky they are.” We do, Pat. We sure do.

Joey Bada$$ does not like being billed below Trinidad Jame$

da330e1a

The upcoming “Under the Influence Tour” has a pretty dope lineup: Wiz Khalifa, A$AP Rocky, B.o.B., Trinidad Jame$ and Joey Bada$$ and Pro Era.

Unfortunately, the tour may be in danger of losing one of its acts:

We understand that Trinidad Jame$ has had more commercial success than the Pro Era boys thus far. But, we can’t say we blame Joey Bada$$ for feeling slighted. Dude spits harder than anyone on that bill and he gets bottom billing behind a guy who is most famous for his Molly induced perspiration?

Hopefully there will be some kind of resolution and everyone will play nice together. The tour hits Washington, D.C., August 1.

About [Saturday] Night: Wavves w/ FIDLAR @ Rock & Roll Hotel

wavves_rnr

We apologize for the awful iPhone pic. We didn’t have a proper camera for this show.

As soon as this show was announced, we circled April 13 on our calendar. Wavves and FIDLAR are two of our favorite bands of the moment. Seeing the two acts together at one of the city’s most authentic rock venues was an opportunity we were not going to miss.

Rock & Roll Hotel has played host to a number of great  emerging artists, but Wavves has already kind of “emerged.” The band’s latest single, “Demon To Lean On,” gets radio airplay. The band’s online fan base is rather large and very engaged. Usually, artists are booking 9:30 club at this point in their career.

Luckily, Nathan Williams and company decided they would rather do a quick underplay tour with fellow SoCal surf-punks FIDLAR and Cheatahs.

About Last Night: The Pietasters at the Black Cat

Pietasters @ Black Cat 3-27-13 008

Last night was a pretty big deal for DMVicious. Our first real foray into the local music scene was during the heat of the D.C. Ska era in the early 2000s. As such, D.C. ska legends, the Pietasters, are very near and dear to our heart.

In 2001, the Pietasters lost its bass player, Todd Eckhardt, to a viral heart infection. Eckhardt was one of the principal songwriters for the band and his loss left a lasting impact on the band and the D.C. ska community at large. Last night, D.C. Brau and Ska Brewing co-sponsored a benefit show at the Black Cat for the Todd Eckhardt Scholarship at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts.

SXSW Re-Cap: Wild Belle & METZ at the Onion A.V. Club Party

Wild Belle

Alas, our last photo set from a long week in Austin. On Saturday afternoon, we made a point to catch Wild Belle’s set at the Onion A.V. Club party at House of Vans (Mohawk). Playing the Mohawk’s indoor stage, it may have been one of the last opportunities to see Wild Belle in such an intimate setting. Seriously, the space is no larger than the average living room.

Having  just released its full length debut, Isles, earlier that week, the band had a busy week full of showcases at SXSW. Siblings Natalie and Elliot Bergman have compiled an impressive body of work in a short period of time. It is only a matter of time before Wild Belle is everywhere.

SXSW Re-Cap: Shark Week & Dune Rats at Headhunters Porch

When we first tried to locate Headhunters Porch, it kept pointing us to the address of a bar called Metal and Lace. With that name, we assumed it was either an S&M club or a gay biker bar, but apparently the name is the result of a makeover from the Spike TV’s Bar Rescue. Thankfully, the original Headhunters’ back porch is still intact and devoid of Metal and Lace’s awful steam-punk theme. But, we digress.

We sought out this show because the hometown heroes, Shark Week, were playing. The band had played a few other showcases throughout the week, but our schedules never matched up. Finally, Saturday evening, we caught Shark Week and were stoked to find out Dune Rats were playing a well.

SXSW Re-Cap: Dawes & Vampire Weekend at Radio Day Stage

IMG_0831main

Vampire Weekend was one of the biggest names on the official SXSW bill. The band’s main showcase took place Saturday night at Stubb’s. In an effort to make sure badge-holders did not totally miss out on Vampire Weekend, they played a brief 30-minute set at the convention center’s Radio Day Stage on Friday afternoon.

The Radio Day Stage hosted a number of high-demand acts in a more exclusive setting. Joining Vampire Weekend on Friday afternoon was roots-rock outfit, Dawes.

Both bands turned in impressive sets despite time constraints, but the anticipation level was much higher for Vampire Weekend. After a two-year hiatus, the band is getting ready to release a its third studio album, Modern Vampires of the City. The set was mostly material from its first two albums, but the band closed with a track off its upcoming release, “Diane Young.”

It was a solid reminder as to why everything Vampire Weekend does gets immediate buzz from the media. Check out our photos after the jump.
