About Last Night: San Cisco, Smallpools and Supercute at Rock & Roll Hotel
So, apparently San Cisco has a lot more fans than we ever realized. We also did not realize the median age of said fans is somewhere around 17 years old. Suffice it to say, it was a youthful evening at Rock & Roll Hotel last night.
The first band on was Supercute, an aptly named group of young gals fronted by 19-year-old Rachel Trachtenburg (Yes, the girl from Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players). Trachtenburg held it down on vocals and ukulele, and the band’s cover of Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black,” was way better than it had any right to be.

If that sounds a little too sweaty for you, we have some decent indoor alternatives, as well.

‘The Gifted’ reaches No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart
Despite a litany of haters and mixed reviews, Wale’s The Gifted has officially reached the top of the Billboard 200 Chart, marking the local rapper’s first number-one album.
This is a proud day for the DMV. Remember when Wale was just a kid kicking freestyles over go-go beats? Now he has enough clout to get Juicy J and Nicki Minaj on a track that samples EU’s “Da’ Butt.”
What makes this accolade even more remarkable is the competition for that spot. The Gifted was released just one week after J. Cole’s Born Sinner, Mac Miller’s Watching Movies With the Sound Off, and Kanye West’s much-lauded Yeezus. All three of those albums received more favorable press than The Gifted, but there is obviously a differing opinion among hip-hop fans.

After a brief hiatus, your weekly “Best Bets” feature is back. This week is still a little slow on the live music front, but there are a few shows worth checking out. Thursday’s Fourth of July concert blowout on the Capitol lawn is always a big draw, even if this year’s performers were hand picked by your Nana–seriously, Barry Manilow and the creepy deep-voiced kid from American Idol?? Anyway, here are some concerts that may give you a little more bang for your buck.
- Mon. 7/1 – CSS & IO Echo @ 9:30 Club, Washington, D.C.
- Wed. 7/3 – Afrika Bambaataa @ U Street Music Hall, Washington, D.C.
- Wed. 7/3 – Lionize @ Rock & Roll Hotel, Washington, D.C.
- Thurs. 7/4 – A Capitol Fourth @ West Lawn of U.S. Capitol, Washington, D.C.
- Fri. 7/5 – The Mantles, Title Tracks & Sick Sick Birds @ Comet Ping Pong, Washington, D.C.
- Fri. 7/5 – Brazilian Girls @ 9:30 Club, Washington, D.C.
- Sat. 7/6 – Polyphonic Spree @ Sixth & I Historic Synagogue, Washington, D.C.
- Sat. 7/6 – Trouble Funk (35th Anniversary) @ Howard Theatre, Washington, D.C.
- Sat. 7/6 – DJs Rex Riot & Basscamp @ Rock & Roll Hotel, Washington, D.C.
