About Last Night: Diarrhea Planet at DC9

IMG_3350

Everything about Diarrhea Planet seems like a joke. The name. Song titles like, “Ghost With a Boner.” The sheer excess of four guitars in one punk-rock band. One thing that is no joke at all: The band’s live show.

Sporting a name that sounds more like like a fecal-themed horror film than a guitar-driven punk band, the Nashville-based sextet has generated quite a buzz over the past couple weeks.Last week, the band release its latest album, I’m Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams. The album itself has received some decent reviews, but seemingly everything written about the band has lauded its live show. In his review for Pitchfork, Jayson Greene said, “If Diarrhea Planet are playing in a 100-mile radius of where you are sitting, go there.”

Video: Solange performs “Bad Girls” in laundromat

Solange_uncapped

R&B singer and indie-darling Solange performed her song “Bad Girls” atop a bank of laundry machines in a Brooklyn laundromat. The performance is the latest chapter in Vitamin Water’s “Uncapped” concert series.

This marks the second concert of the “Uncapped” series. The first installment featured Odd Future’s Earl Sweatshirt performing at an auto body shop in New York City.

About Last Night: San Cisco, Smallpools and Supercute at Rock & Roll Hotel

Smallpools at Rock & Roll Hotel (More photos below)

So, apparently San Cisco has a lot more fans than we ever realized. We also did not realize the median age of said fans is somewhere around 17 years old. Suffice it to say, it was a youthful evening at Rock & Roll Hotel last night.

The first band on was Supercute, an aptly named group of young gals fronted by 19-year-old Rachel Trachtenburg (Yes, the girl from Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players). Trachtenburg held it down on vocals and ukulele, and the band’s cover of Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black,” was way better than it had any right to be.

Best Bets: Concerts you should probably check out

LilWayne

Don’t let this heat wave scare you off, there are a bunch of great outdoor shows to check out this week. Baltimore’s annual Artscape takes place this weekend and features a ton of free live music and all the other weird stuff that Baltimore does so well. If that sounds a little too sweaty for you, we have some decent indoor alternatives, as well.

2012 MusiCares Person Of The Year Tribute To Paul McCartney - Concert

The holiday fuss is over, but that does not mean you should abandon your aspirations of drinking outdoors with live music. This week’s group of shows are a perfect kick-start to get you back into the swing of things.

Warning: Do not rush Action Bronson’s stage

Heed this advice, or end up like the bamma in this video.

At a show in Boston, one of Bronson’s fans decided to rush the stage. In return, Bam Bam decided to give him the leg-sweep of death and toss his ass back into the crowd. Check the footage below.

Re-Cap: Sunday at Firefly Festival

Firefly Festival 2013 re-caps: Friday | Saturday | Sunday

Oh Sunday, you sly devil. On paper, Sunday was easily the weakest of the three days. It was a shorter schedule, and we had a lot of mixed feelings on the “split-headliner” idea going into the festival. Our hopes for Sunday were further dashed when a string of thunderstorms rolled in just as the bands got underway. We were in for a pleasant surprise.

Re-Cap: Saturday at Firefly Festival

Firefly Festival 2013 re-caps: Friday | Saturday | Sunday

Of the three days of music at Firefly, we were most excited about Saturday’s lineup. It was an eclectic, high-quality selection of artists that really stood out compared to Friday and Sunday.

We started our day with Japandroids. These guys were in our list of top-five must see acts, and their set was everything we expected. We have complained a bit about the lack of rock bands on this year’s lineup, but Japandroids essentially made up for that gap by itself. The Canadian two-piece had a ton of raw energy for such an early set, and the guys seemed to really enjoy what they were doing. This was the band’s last show on a long tour, and Japandroids left nothing on stage–though, they may have left some fireworks in the campgrounds.

About Last Night: Teen Mom, Other Factors & Go Cozy at Comet Ping Pong

IMG_2723[1]

For those who have not been to a show at Comet Ping Pong, we urge you to go now. Despite being isolated in a somewhat unhip section of town, the small pizzeria/ping pong bar/concert hall is one of the most unique venues in town and constantly plays host to great local talent. Last night, Comet hosted local bands Teen Mom and Go Cozy, as well as the  local-rooted Other Factors.
