XXL announces ‘Freshman Class 2013’

xxl-freshmen-2013-cover1

XXL’s much ballyhooed “Freshman Class” list is out. Each year, the magazine anoints a new class of  ten emerging hip-hop artists to grace its annual cover story.

This year’s class: Schoolboy Q, Trinidad Jame$, Joey Bada$$, Ab-Soul, Logic, Action Bronson, Kirko Bangz, Travi$ Scott, Dizzy Wright, and Angel Haze.

The magazine has also listed Chief Keef as “The 11th Freshman.”

This list is a lot easier to digest than MTV’s. We would probably drop Kirko Bangz and add Chance the Rapper, but we can live with that. Also, we’re stoked to see three of the artists from our own Hottest MCs list on this year’s cover (Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, Angel Haze).

Let us now what you think in the comment section.

DMVicious’ Hottest MCs of 2013

Much has been made over MTV’s Hottest MCs list this week. Sure, it is a little hard to respect the opinion of a network whose top programs include Teen Mom, Teen Mom 2 and 16 & Pregnant. But, MTV did a respectable job getting legitimate panelists to deliberate the proceedings.

Despite nailing the top two spots, MTV’s list does have some glaring omissions and rankings that need to be rectified. In response, DMVicious has compiled its own list of the 10 hottest MCs of 2013.

DISCLAIMER: Jay-Z and Kanye West were not included on this list because they have transcended the rest of the field. They are both music industry royalty and will always be in the conversation of hottest MCs. This statement seemed necessary in the event that Kanye West somehow stumbles upon this list.

MTV’s Hottest MC List Stirs Controversy

MTV released the first half of its Hottest MC VIII list. The rankings are determined by a panel of journalists led by Sway Calloway (the “What’s up world?” guy).  Every year, there is a handful of rappers who catch feelings over the list. Every year, that handful includes Kanye West.

Unsurprisingly, Kanye West took exception to landing in seventh-place this year. West called into Hot 97 and launched into a vintage Kanye West-style rant about how the judges don’t like “Kanye in a kilt” (audio below). In fairness to Yeezy, that does seem a bit low.

The top-five have not yet been announced, but it is hard to think of five current rappers who legitimately out-rank Kanye West. A$AP Rocky and Drake could make a strong argument for top-five status as well.

Detroit rapper Danny Brown has taken exception to his likely exclusion from list–let’s be honest, he won’t be in the top-five. This morning Brown posted a track called “#HottestMC” to his SoundCloud and makes a convincing case for why deserves to be somewhere in the top-10.
