Don’t let this heat wave scare you off, there are a bunch of great outdoor shows to check out this week. Baltimore’s annual Artscape takes place this weekend and features a ton of free live music and all the other weird stuff that Baltimore does so well. If that sounds a little too sweaty for you, we have some decent indoor alternatives, as well.

Lollapalooza 2013 Lineup Announced

The official lineup has been announced for Perry Ferrell’s annual mega-festival.

Highlights include: The Cure, Mumford & Sons, the Killers, Nine Inch Nails, Phoenix, the Postal Service, Vampire Weekend, New Order, Queens of the Stone Age, the National, the Lumineers, Kendrick Lamar, Eric Church, Knife Party, Steve Aoki, Thievery Corporation, Major Lazer, Hot Chip, Local Natives, Two Door Cinema Club, 2 Chainz, Tegan and Sara, Lana Del Rey, Alt-J and many more.

Lollapalooza is set to engulf Chicago’s Grant Park August 2-4.

Album Review: Tegan and Sara, ‘Heartthrob’

tegan-sara-heartthrobTegan and Sara have found themselves taking some chances lately that could permanently destroy their indie street cred: collaborating with the likes of Tiesto and David Guetta, writing music for Carly Rae Jepsen.

On the duo’s seventh studio release, Heartthrobit is clear that the identical twins are intent on moving into the realm of mainstream pop and radio airplay. The album is produced by Greg Kurstin, who is known for working with artists like Ke$ha and Kelly Clarkson, and live instruments have taken a backseat to synthesizers and drum machines. It is a drastic change, and on paper it sounds like a terrible idea for an already-established duo on the wrong side of 30 years old.

Heartthrob  opens with, “Closer;” a radio-ready romp replete with an uber-catchy hook and a buoyant dance-pop backdrop. The lyrics paint a perfect picture of the moment when a casual encounter turns into an inevitable hook-up. It is fun while it lasts, but serves more as a set-up for the rest of the album.  Immediately following the feel-good opening track, Heartthrob takes a swift turn toward heartbreak and never really looks back.
