Listen: King Krule has a hip-hop side project

SubLunaCity

So, the British teenager who took the indie scene by storm last year has a hip-hop side project called Sub Luna City. You can stream the group’s mixtape, City Rivims Mk 1, below.

The music is about what you would expect when you hear “King Krule” and “hip-hop” in the same sentence–super moody chords and sparse percussion. This mixtape shows a whole new side to the artist responsible for one of last year’s best debuts.

A$AP Mob and Wu-Tang Clan collide for ‘Trillmatic’ video

ASAPNast_Trillmatic

It is amazing to hear a record like this drop in 2013. A$AP Nast and Method Man team up for a track that sounds like a leftover from an era when Wu-Tang ruled the world and hip-hop was still dangerous.

Kicking it on the roof with Village Psychic

VillagePsychic_Nov 8 2013

Brooklyn’s Village Psychic has had a busy couple of months. The band made its live debut at a CMJ showcase a few weeks ago, and is gearing up for a show at Tammany Hall on Monday, all while juggling a forthcoming EP and full-length album. On top of that, frontman Will Broussard spends time DJing as Terror Dactel (remember him?) and drumming for the Death Set. Luckily, we found some time to catch up.

Earlier today, I met Village Psychic on the roof of a high-rise in Midtown Manhattan. We hung out in the boiler room for a while and recorded a stripped-down acoustic version of the band’s new track, “Dancer.” After the performance, we chatted about everything from Geocities websites, to Miley Cyrus’ future.

Check out the video and the interview after the jump!

New Music: M.I.A. – ‘Y.A.L.A.’

MIA_matangi

The Sri Lankan queen of dance music has released a new track off her forthcoming album, Matangi. “Y.A.L.A.” is a typically bass-heavy banger that sounds similar to the Diplo-produced tracks that helped launch M.I.A. to international stardom.

The song is a pro-reincarnation rebuttal to Drake’s “Y.O.L.O.” suggesting that “You Always Live Again.”

Girl Talk and Freeway give a peek at their upcoming project

girltalk

So apparently, Girl Talk and Freeway have been working on a mixtape together. Both artists have been fairly tight-lipped about the project, but video of the two has emerged from a surprise show at Brooklyn Bowl last weekend. Good god, I am stoked to hear the rest of this project. That beat is filthy and Freeway is probably the most slept-on emcee in hip-hop.

What makes this sting even more, is that both artists were scheduled to perform at the ill-fated D.C. installment of the Rock the Bells festival the weekend before this show. If only Guerrilla Union knew how to properly promote a show on the east coast…

Tyler the Creator feat. Domo Genesis, Hodgy Beats and Earl Sweatshirt – “Look”

photobomb

This new Tyler the Creator track is Odd Future at its finest. Tyler links up with OF members Domo Genesis, Hodgy Beats and Earl Sweatshirt for a track that recalls the group’s abrasive beginnings. Could this be a track from the upcoming EarlWolf album??

Download: We Are The Brave – “Sparrow”

WeAreTheBrave_Sparrow

To celebrate the release of its debut EP, Noctua, Australian duo We Are The Brave is offering a free download of its track, “Sparrow.”
The song is a “Thelma and Louise” type tale scored with lush synths and Jess Chalker’s hypnotic vocals.

Tonight: Rosco Bandana at Gypsy Sally’s

RoscoBandana

Rosco Bandana is the kind of band country music needs right now. We could turn this into a long preachy post about how insufferable popular country has become, but that would take attention away from how rad this band is. We’ll let the videos below speak for themselves.

Don’t miss Rosco Bandana tonight at Gypsy Sally’s in Georgetown. Stay tuned for a review tomorrow.
